The World travel Awards (WTA) for this year were dominated by Portugal. Being nominated in 14 categories, The Algarve took 5 awards, while Lisbon and Madeira were awarded with a WTA gong.
This year’s award ceremony happened on the 31st of August in Turkey. The voting for different prizes is organized via the internet for the general public, but the opinions of the world’s top tourism heads are also taken into account. Vila Joya, Albufeira, was voted for two years in the row the best European beach destination and the best boutique resort. Conrad Hotel was chosen as the best luxury resort. Hotel Quinta do Lago was awarded as the best golf resort and Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, Sagres, was distinguished as the best villa resort.
One of the distinguished guests at the ceremony was the boss of the Algarve Tourism Board, Desidério Silva. He was proud to see confirmation of the last year’s prizes, especially for the Algarve. This region is not only chosen as the best beach resort on the European level, but has also won other international rewards as well as the prizes on a national level. Algarve was awarded 6 national awards. They went to: The Ria Park Hotel & Spa for the best business and conferences hotel; The Martinhal for the best family resort; The Hilton Vilamoura for the best golf resort; Hotel Quinta do Lago for the best overall resort and The Blue&Green Vilalara Thalassa Resort for the best spa resort.
Lisbon was awarded as the Europe’s Leading City Break Destination and Madeira was awarded as the Europe’s Leading Island Destination. Madeira’s Vine Hotel was also chosen the Europe’s Leading Design Hotel. Finally, Portugal as a country was chosen to be the Europe’s leading golf destination. Desidério Silva finds forty golf playgrounds in the Algarve to be the most decisive for Portugal winning this prize.
