Aaron Hernandez the former NFL star was found dead in his prison cell early Wednesday, Massachusetts prisons officials said. Aaron was found dead in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley after 3 a.m. Christopher Fallon a spokesman from the Department of Correction said in a statement.

The spokesman said that Hernandez hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a prison cell window. The former NFL star was in the maximum security state prison. The police officers from the prison were not aware that Hernandez was planning on taking his own life, and if they had Aaron would have been transferred to a mental health unit. Jose Baez, Hernandez’s lawyer said in a statement “The family and legal team is shocked and surprised at the news of Aaron’s death in his prison cell”. Aaron didn’t write any letters to his family or legal team that would have indicated his suicide. Aaron’s lawyer also said that his client was happy for the opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence, and he requested that the authorities conduct a transparent and thorough investigation.
